Ladies and gentlemen, this is one of those drag race videos that no matter who makes it, you watch it.
This is hypercar vs hypercar. This is the best and brightest of German engineering, against the best and brightest of American engineering.
This, simply, is epic.
Those that know YouTube car culture know that TheStradman is one of the luckiest guys on the planet. He starting making videos at the right time, with the right team, to make it one of the most-watched car channels out there.
It also means that he was able to afford a gently used Bugatti 16/4 Veyron. We’re talking about the original hypercar, the car that defined a whole new generation of power and performance. 1,001 BHP, 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 motor, all-wheel-drive.
Up against it is the very first production SSC Tuatara. Production chassis #1. The one that was shown at the Philidelphia Auto Show earlier this year. And driving it against TheStradman is Jarod Shelby, the founder and CEO of SSC.
And on paper, it has the Bugatti dead to rights. Developed by Nelson Race Engines, a 5.9 liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crank produces anywhere from 1,350 BHP with 91 octane, up to 1,750 BHP on E85. Guess which fuel they used for the drag race?
And to make it fair for the Bugatti, they do the race from a rolling start, so that the AWS system in the Veyron doesn’t have strain as much off a dead stop.
Still, the instant the flag drops, even with the Bugatti pushing on all four wheels as hard as it can, the Tuatara is gone.
We’re not talking a measure of car lengths here. It’s a matter of just under a second. At over 220 MPH.
The Tuatara literally squats down over its rear wheels and is gone.
And, as pointed out by TheStradman, this is the first time the Tuatara has “officially” raced anything.
Afterwards, Jarod takes Stradman for a quick ride in the Tuatara.
Quick, in this terminology, means that with power to spare, he pulls out of it at 240 MPH where the speedo is still climbing like a rocket for space.
Ladies and gentlemen, we may have found the single fastest gas-powered hypercar in the world.
